book review alert!

i will be reviewing a book called Hetty Feather, by Jacqueline Wilson.

author: Jacqueline Wilson

plot: Hetty, a British orphan is in search of her true mother. An emotional story about her life in foster care and what she thinks about being in care.

why i liked it: it is really good, just the way it is written really makes you think about the characters.
ages: 10+

other books by this author:
Sapphire Battersea, Lily Alone, The Longest Whale Song , and many more.

photo collages (ages 8+)

hey there art lovers!
this is a fantastic way to use up those old photo frames no one wants anymore. i used an old mirror, but you can use a photo frame if you want. these look great on your bedroom wall, or as a gift, but i have mine next to my bed!

you will need:
photos
strong craft glue or PVA
an old mirror or photo frame
scissors
spray paint (optional)

what to do:
1. if you want to spray your mirror/frame, do it now.
2. cut out the photos, cutting carefully around the people or object, leaving a strip of background around the picture.
3. get your mirror or frame and start laying your pictures out. which one will go where?
4. use the strong glue to stick your pictures on, overlapping the sides and leaving no empty space.
5. when your creation is dry, carefully hang or stand it where you want it to go.

voila! one beautiful frame!

fun ideas for 5+ year olds

Rainy Day crafts!
there's nothing like a rainy day, when you're stuck inside, bored and just want to run around screaming. that's why i have posted some cool craft and play ideas for five year olds and up. hope you enjoy!

wooden spoon puppets
you will need:
a wooden spoon
glue
pom-poms
stick on eyes
crepe paper
fabric
wool
pipe-cleaners
textas or thick felt tip pens
an audience

1. get your wooden spoon and draw a face, roughly marking out where to glue the eyes.
2. using the glue, stick some wool for hair, then stick the eyes in their designated spot.
3. go crazy! stick on fabric, crepe paper, pom-poms and pipe cleaners to create your puppets outfit.
4. make as many as you need, then write a fun play for them to perform, in front of your audience.

indoor picnics

i still love doing this on a rainy day!

you will need:
a blanket
some lunchboxes or plates
eating utensils
water bottles
teddy bears (optional)
food
a couple of friends, brothers or sisters (optional)

1. spread your blanket out in a  nice place, where you aren't in the way of others.
2. prepare a meal in the lunchboxes or on plates, making sure you fill water bottles.
3. grab eating utensils, if needed.
4. if you're alone, why not get some teddy bears or friends, brothers and sisters to come along to your picnic!

Being American, i love choc chip cookies, especially these ones!
here's a recipe we use all the time.
 you will need:
125 g ( 4 oz) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/4 cups tightly packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 1/2 cups plain (all purpose) flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
a pinch of salt
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips

here's what to do:
preheat the oven to 180 degrees, 350 Fahrenheit. place butter and sugar in a bowl and beat until light and creamy. add vanilla and egg then stir to combine. stir in the sifted flour, baking powder and salt until just combined. fold through chocolate chips.
place spoonfuls of cookie mixture on a greased and lined baking tray, allowing room for spreading. cook for 15  to 20 minutes, until they turn pale gold. allow to cool on the tray for 5 minutes before placing biscuits on a wire rack to cool further. makes 16.
